Foglight® for SQL Server

System Requirements

Before installing Foglight for SQL Server, ensure that your system meets the hardware and software requirements detailed in Foglight System Requirements and Platform Support Guide. Customers running large deployments (above 50 instances) should consult with the Foglight for SQL Server sizing assistant.

Foglight for SQL Server requires WMI access for monitoring Windows Operating system metrics on the various SQL Server dashboards. Ensure that the WMI and Remote Registry services are started prior to creating the agents and throughout the monitoring process. Firewall usage requires taking further steps to ensure connection to WMI, as detailed in the known issues section under Connection to WMI.

New in This Release: Foglight 5.5.4

Foglight for SQL Server, which was introduced in Foglight version 5.5.2, can be run side-by-side with the existing SQL Server cartridges (2000 and 2005), but is intended as a functional replacement for these cartridges.

Foglight for SQL Server is an n-tier application that leverages a web-based user interface to ensure that you have complete visibility into your SQL Server infrastructure wherever you have an Internet connection.  The product components are as follows:

  • A centralized middleware component, data store, and self-contained web server that provides web-based access to information.  Data storage is available using either an embedded MySQL database (shipped with the Foglight installer) or external (customer-owned and managed) MySQL, Oracle, or SQL Server database.  This component is leveraged for discovering instances, providing email alerting capabilities, automating responses to alarms, and for related actions.
  •  Remote data collectors to gather data from your monitored environment and send it to the middleware.
  • A web-based user interface for diagnosis, administration, and configuration.
Foglight for SQL Server is actually implemented as two main cartridges, the Foglight for SQL Server database cartridge and the Automatic Discovery Cartridge. Foglight enables domain-specific monitoring and analysis through the implementation of cartridges.  A cartridge is a fusion of collection technology, rules, policies, and dashboards.  The cartridges that make up Foglight for SQL Server provide web-enabled dashboards for centralized visibility, management and health checks for the SQL Server instances deployed in your environment.  The cartridges also provide reporting and analysis in addition to proactive alerting and alarm workflows for tracking your responses to critical performance anomalies. Foglight for SQL Server also supports launching the Foglight Performance Analysis client (also known as the thick client or Foglight Performance Analysis GUI) in-context once identified a performance anomaly requires investigation.
